Login prompt only - No GUI
« on: October 24, 2010, 02:15:10 AM »
I just tried to install ubuntu 10.4 via Wubi on a Dell latitude D500 with win2k.  The install went fine without errors and asked me to reboot.  Upon reboot I chose ubuntu and I see Ubuntu on the screen with some red dots under it and then the screen garbles and flashes and puts me at a login prompt.  I can login but then I am still at a command prompt.  I have never used ubuntu before, could some please point me in the right direction to get started troubleshooting.  What command can I run to see if there were errors? How can I test if it is a video driver etc..

Thanks in advance,

recently I have same problem. I used command
" sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop "
It solved my problem. You can try this.

hello ,

Did :
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop work ?

what is your video driver ?

try log-in by the recovery mode then choose fail-safe x mode
