Ubuntu 8.10: blinking screen during booting
« on: February 21, 2010, 04:34:46 PM »
Ubuntu 8.10: Screen started to blink during booting process.
This did not happen earlier.
The file /var/log/Xorg.0.log contains the only warning
(WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic" does not exist.

and there are no errors (EE)
I've thought tnat there is some problem with nvidia driver, have installed EnvyNG and updated the driver. Did not help. So, I assume that something from updates made some wrong changes in the Grub loader.
This is beyond my knowledge, ----  why is that and how to treat the problem?

if you can not log-in go in to the recovery mode :
- go the root shell log-in
and type sudo update-grub to update Grub

Happen to be - worked, but not completely:
After application of this command  during Restart  and
later Shut down and booting into Ubuntu again this blinking was not present. However, today in the morning it has appeared again!! Yesterday YouTube and TV on-line has been watched, can one of these be a reason? It is strange since during several months before this problem did not exist, certainly some of updates courses the problem. I believe this is not the best solution to update GRUB every time before shutting down computer.. Any suggestions?

1-about fonts. The "terminal reply" is:
xfonts-base is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  libmpeg3cv libquicktimecv libgtkgl2.0-1 libguicastcv libwxgtk2.4-1 ctsim-doc
  optlibx11-noxcb-data ctsim-help
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

2- Flash-plugin is installed via Synaptic, the version is 10.0.45ubuntu0.8
3- I  have Chrome, Seamonkey and Firefox, but use normally Firefox
(Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6 )
- Chrome and Seamonkey I am using when I have some problem with Firefox.

New observation: recently observed the same symptoms  - blinking screen,- when started the screen after a long break. The computer was not switched off, just the screen was self-off due to long break. Does it mean, that this is not the GRUB who is "guilty"? The driver for Nvidia was updated via EnvyNG. First time I updated to the version 180.11.0ubuntu0.1,
Then returned to the previous, 177.82, which is recommended. Now I have installed 177.82
 [table align=center]
version    compatible    recommended
180.11.0ubuntu0.1yesx
177.82.0ubuntu0.1yesyes

yes it means the the grs card driver
2) what model is your grs card driver ?

.... you may need to reinstall the driver not by EnvyNG as it does have some issues ...  for help installing the driver see the post :http://ubuntugeek.com/forum/index.php/topic,103.0.html by me , it will work with ubuntu  8:10

PS are you 64bit ??

Thanks; I followed were could, your guidings. After updating the driver (see below) and restarting computer  blinking disappeared, but now I'd like to check several times more to be sure. I'll report here the result.
step1 :
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C video
  *-display
       description: VGA compatible controller
       product: G72 [GeForce 7500 LE]
       vendor: nVidia Corporation
       physical id: 0
       bus info: pci@0000:18:00.0
       version: a1
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list
       configuration: driver=nvidia latency=0 module=nvidia

step 2:
Code: [Select]
jockey-gtk --the recommended driver chosen, version 180
step 3:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C video *-display UNCLAIMED
       description: VGA compatible controller
       product: G72 [GeForce 7500 LE]
       vendor: nVidia Corporation
       physical id: 0
       bus info: pci@0000:18:00.0
       version: a1
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list
       configuration: latency=0

1. As I reported before, I've tried to use both, EnvyNG and jockey-gtk, the driver version which is now in use is 180.
BUT
2. The screen blinking is back, even if I do
Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub just before shutting-down computer.
3. The firefox has been installed from their site. At present moment I use Firefox 3.6, whereas one can install from Ubuntu rep-s only Firefox 3.0.18.
Plugins, that I have installed are:
  • flashplugin-nonfree 10.0.45.2ubuntu0.8
  • Totem-mozilla plugin 2.24.3-0ubuntu1
  • mozilla-plugin-vlc 0.9.4-1ubuntu3.2
Any more ideas?

I've done everything what was recommended. Alas, nothing helps. The only new feature which has appeared is the screenshot "Nvidia beta driver" in the interval between loaded Ubuntu and the window with login & password. Firefox stopped to show any windows based on flash player, whereas Opera (installed specially to check) works perfectly. But now I've started to suspect that there is something wrong with display: I observed the same screen blinking after long break even under Windows 7 (my second system on other disk). If there is some commands/procedure to check it? The symptom is that every time after the screen did not work for a while, it returns to life via the blinking phase, does not matter if the computer is under Linux or Windows: when I just restart the comp, this blinking often does not arise.

joe12. thanks a lot for your time! Now it is has become clear that it is monitor itself has a problem, since I've made an experiments with other PC and the symptoms are the same. I have to find out which repare part should be replaced in the monitor. It would be a pity to throw it away since it works perfectly when it is hot and blinking only during period when it is cold, until the temperature increases till working temperature. Thanks again!
