In my case the device name is sda5.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
when I run sudo fsck /dev/sda5

fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
e2fsck 1.41.12(17-May-2010)
fsck.ext4:Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda5
Filesystem mounted or openend exclusively by another program?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
@Joe12 :I haven't been able to find a solution to this new problem. Many of the discussions on internet show that this solution works, but in my case I don't know what the problem is.
Please help me with this.
-Thank you

Hello ,

The problem  -no inti - happens normally after a power cut or put your pc in to hibernate .

Do you have any 3rd party drivers install for you video card ?

lot of people have had the problem , I 've had it the only other work was to re-install Ubuntu -- backing up any i needed first.

yes you tell the forums to notify you ,when you post back click --additional options -- then tick notify me of replies .

Hope it helps !

Ok then, I want to uninstall ubuntu 10.10 so that I can reinstall it ( I couldn't solve the problem). The last time I did it (same day 2009, lol) I screwed up. I couldn't boot into windows, so I had to reinstall windows too.
I still don't know how to uninstall or rather remove ubuntu from my system ( dual boot, windows7 and ubuntu 10.10). I do not have a windows cd, just have a cd (from HP) which I used to upgrade from vista to 7.
I would really appreciate it if you could guide me with this or at least direct me to a reliable solution.

hello

Here you are :

1)Boot up the Ubuntu 10.10 cd , hit return once the back ground appears.

2)From the menu  choose install Ubuntu.

3)Work through steps 1 & 2 , when the installer ask you to ' allocate drive space'.

4)Choose specify partitions manually , let the installer  scan the disk.

5)Once the list appears find the type marked ext4 right on it and choose change .

6) change the following :

*use as -- ext4

*tick format the partition

*mount point -- /

7) work through the installer and there you go !

I've been busy..so couldn't reply

I tried it, but the installer stops responding once I choose English as the language and confirm space and power supply and click forward.

Please help

I guess it is the steps 1 & 2
i.e  before I'm asked to allocate drive space

I'm having the same problem. I booted from LiveCD I try fsck, but it said:

Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda1
Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?

I check with mount and dev/sda1 is not mounted.

Then  I try reinstaling the hole system but it freezes when it shoud show particions.

Any solutions? Please help.
