My password is not working

Hi,

I had installed the Ubuntu 10 64 bit, Two days it was working fine and suddenly, I could not login, I am getting the message Authentication Failure,

I tried to go to root shell (pressed esc) and I am getting the error as

hostname main process  terminated with status 1

What I must do to get the password

did you install any updates before this happen ?
