Exiting X... Noooob Question
« on: April 25, 2010, 08:23:14 PM »
I am very new to Ubuntu 9.10.  I just installed it yesterday and have been struggling to get all my stuff working ever since (coming from Windows this is no surprise).  I have had some experience in Python and recently took it upon myself to try to modify some of the startup scripts to get my video card working.  I found this http://uk.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/195.36.15/README/newusertips.html, but to naught I have been unsuccessful in getting out of my video driver "mode".

I want to quit X to install the video driver.  How can I do this?  I am running Ubuntu 9.10 (64-bit) on a Gateway FX-P7805u http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2009/PSeries/P-78/P-78nv.shtml.

Thanks for the help.

If you are using an nvidia card, none of that should be necessary. Go to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers. You should be presented with an option to use the proprietary nvidia driver available from the Ubuntu repository.

To answer your specific question, you can drop to a terminal by pressing Ctrl-Alt and any function key from F2 to F6. Your X desktop lives on TTY 7, which is equivalent to Ctrl-Alt-F7, so press that to get back to your desktop.
