Network between two linux computers
« on: March 10, 2013, 05:51:00 AM »
Hi, this is my setup. I have a Desktop running Linux Mint (13 or 14 not sure) connected to a wifi router. The router aquires address dynamically from my ISP. I have a Laptop running Kubuntu 12.04.2. I want to make this laptop talk to the linux computer using the routers gateway. Something like windows homegroup but native to linux. Is there a graphical utility to perform this?

Thanks,
Prasana

Use one of the following

NFS or SSHFS or samba

Check the following documentation

For NFS - http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/nfs.htm

For SSHFS - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSHFS

For Samba - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Samba

Try simple GUI application Giver and this is available in ubuntu packages

sudo apt-get install giver

simple file sharing desktop application

Other people running Giver on your network are automatically discovered and you can send files to them by simply dragging the file to their photo or icon shown in Giver.

Hi, this is a newbie question again but a very valid one. My data plan is 8 GB per month that's max. If I use any of the above mentioned connection methods, they act like server-client basis. Won't that raise charges from my ISP? If I had to pay for moving files between two computers networked locally, then there won't be any juice left for browsing internet and so on. In general how does the ISP keep track of how much I've downloaded? Will my router tell them i've received this much packets this month and so on?
