Laptop doesn't suspend when the lid is closed

I'm not sure this is the right forum. This may need to be moved to the Hardware forum. If so, please let me know and I'll post it there.

My laptop doesn't suspend or hibernate when the lid is closed. The only thing that happens is that the screen goes dark. Otherwise, the fan still runs and it's still on. I can come back an hour later, open the lid and the fan is still running, and obviously the disks are still spun up as it responds to any input immediately. That part may have been changed when I shortened the time before it shuts itself down, though.

Now, here's the puzzler:  If I manually suspend it once, after I reopen the lid and resume using the machine, I can then close it and it will suspend in just seconds. It will continue to suspend and resume correctly until I shut down the machine.

This isn't a high-priority item, obviously, just a minor inconvenience.

The machine is a Toshiba Satellite (yeah, I know...I know...  :P ) A305-S5915.

Thanks!

Ubuntu rocks!
