can I still upload a pic from my camera(fujifilm) even though I have switched from windows over to ubuntu? I am a newbie ::)

Yes you can jayquanaely.  I've read that Ubunu supports almost every type of digital camera.  Meaning that they're just plug and play.  It certainly detects my camera.  Just plug your camera into a usb port and click Places; Computer from the menu in your panel and your camera should be listed as a drive, which you can open to browse through the pictures.  If you want to try this before installing Ubuntu, just go to http://www.ubuntu.com/ and download their latest stable iso image of the Operating system.  Burn this image to a CD or DVD and restart your computer with the disk inside the drive (trying ubuntu will not make any changes to your hard drive.) When a screen opens asking for what language to use, chose your own language.  Later a new window will open asking if you want to try or install Ubuntu.  Click Try Ubuntu to try it out without making any changes to your hard drive.  Once Ubuntu has been loaded, you can then plug in your camera and see if it detects it.
