i am new to ubuntu and am trying to install on an acer 5050 laptop

i can install  just  fine i think from the 10.10 install disk.  but  when i  go back to boot from disk it gets  a mbr error.  this  is  because  acer puts a restore section on  the  disk   unfortunately  i deleted this section. when i try  to  reinstall  xp  from  a disk  i  have laying  around  from  an  old  computer (xp pro) it  gets  to  the  34 min remaining mark and shuts down  ??   any ideas

solved  by installing suse / it then will  boot / but  does  not see  wireless  card / it  will  now boot into ubuntu / now  i have a problem with wireless  card having to be re-installed every few minutes / card is an atheros ar5bmb5  any  suggestions will be  appreciated
