lost volume control icon

im trying to get back the volume control icon in the top panel. i am running ubuntu 9.10 koala karmic. i have know sound at all. i can get to the controls, see my sound card but no icon to  control volume. how do i get back my sound? thank you so much to whom can help me in my dilemma.

right click on the panel and try to add "volume control", it brings up the "add to panel" --> notification area
