Help needed with ATI driver and upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10

Here is my problems:
1. I am a Ubuntu Newbee with very little knowledge
2. I have Ubuntu 9.04 installed and want to upgrade to 9.10
3. My Video card is not supported in 9.10 until now
4. I don't know if I should upgrade to 9.10 first or install ATI driver first
5. I don't know any of the terminal commands to install the 9.10 ATI driver

So basically I need step by step instructions including all terminal commands and steps to get a working 9.10, the driver I downloaded is called "ati-driver-installer-10-1-x86.x86_64.run" which I understand is for my 32bit system which is a Dell E510.

hi i have a nvida card but here are some way's of installing your's :
way 1
If the ATI driver is install and work's in 9:04 then it should  work in 9:10
but i would recommend that you use Ubuntu's inbuilt diver-installer  find it by going to:
1)System then admin
2) find hard-ware divers
3)open it up and it will tell you if it's installed or not
..... or you can go to the soft-ware center and click system
and find the ATI diver

or your way

From the the sound's of it you download a script  to run this
1)move it to your desktop
2) open up the the terminal
and  change to the desktop by typing :cd ~/Desktop

3) give it the right to run by typing :sudo chmod +x ati-driver-installer-10-1-x86.x86_64.run

4) run it by typing :sudo ./ati-driver-installer-10-1-x86.x86_64.run

tell me if it's work

I am very confused. I tried the first method in Ubuntu 9.04 with no hardware drivers found. I then proceeded to method 2 and it installed. But now that I am installed I do not know if it works, I looked in hardware drivers again and it said none installed. I tried the command aticonfig in terminal and it said no driver found. I updated to 9.10 and everytime I try to install the driver it does everything in terminal and it starts the installer but freezes at the accept screen. It is a driver problem and I am stuck at what to do to get in running. The computer is useless as is. Is there a way to avoid the graphical interface as that is what is causing the freeze I can't even use update manager as it freezes also.

UPDATE: According to Synaptic Package Manager the driver is installed. When I go into terminal and type "aticonfig" I get a error no compatible hardware installed. My card is an ATI X300Gt which is listed as usable with the driver. I know it is a driver problem as I am getting screen garbage all over.

UPDATE 2: I think I have it working, at least it isn't crashing. I have one slight problem. After trying to install three times I have three folders on the desktop that are locked and I need to remove them. How do I unlock these files?

1) make sure you go to system- then admin and software source's - updates,next tick back port's refresh  and   
install any updates first.

2) it's sound as if the config files for the driver on the desktop
you could  make a folder in your home folder  called driver's  and change  to it when you install .

3) and you can install ubuntu tweak -http://ubuntu-tweak.com/downloads/and add the x-update source's   ( its good for lot's of thing's) this means once you've install the diver you will always be up to date !!!

4)  if you go system - preference's then appearance try turning on the effect's  to test if the diver is fully installed

Followed your directions and I then reinstalled the driver, and then rebooted. I went to appearance tab, but couldn't enable effects. I guess either I have the wrong driver or something else is wrong. At least it isn't crashing. I use it mostly for internet and file storage.

2)try installing the driver's from synaptic  this should make the kernel find the driver's  as you would like ( if your happy with it should be fine as it is)

I installed Compiz but for some strange reason the hardware is not recognized. I have a Dell 510 with the ATI 300GT Video card. I am at a loss as to why it doesn't install.

When I used the command aticonfig to configure the driver it came back with ""No compatible hardware found" I have no idea what is causing this.

According to what I read in this article the X300 Radeon cards are not covered. So this driver is different than the other. No I am really confused.

The first step where you load the driver using Hardware Drivers, none are found. The application does not either see that drivers are available or see the card.

go synaptic and check the  Kernel Headers ending with 17/18 are installed .
also make sure you have : 
XFree86-Mesa-libGL
• libstdc++
• libgcc
• XFree86-libs
• fontconfig
• freetype
• zlib
• gcc

all this is found in the Installer Instructions on ATI (http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Legacy/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.21&lang=English)

I don't see linux Headers 17/18 only I have installed Kernel 2.6.31-18. Also some of the other files are not listed in Synaptic. I was able to install the driver, but it will not let me configure it. I have tried the commands listed in the second post no luck. I even tried aticonfig and comes up with no compatible device found.

 if you kernel is 18 look for Headers 18 !!
