Hey, great script.

I am tempted to give it a go, I have 2 soundcards and only one is working, but since I don´t user Karmic for anything other than standard desktop activities, it does not bug me that my ICE1712 card is not working.  I think I will leave it as it is.

See, I have Ubuntu Studio 9.04 for my Ardour recording.  I keep getting Xruns, and have read in some other forum that it could be related with Pulse Audio.  However, since Ubuntu Studio comes with network-manager-applet disabled by default (apparently it messes around with RT audio), I would like to know if there is a way to remove Pulse Audio safely with no network connection whatsoever under Ubuntu Studio 9.04.

Anybody tried that?

you could simply use this section of the above tut.

sudo nautilus

Now use this virtual sudo desktop, enter pulse in the search in the SAME window (click the magnifying glass top right), make sure to add hiden files, and search the file system so that you get everything. When you use this method search is slowed down, be patient, wait. Now you have all the pulse files, and sudo privilege, look through the search results and make sure some misc data dint get mixed in (non pulse related files) , if its all good , drag and select all remaining pulse files, while selected, hit shift+del, hit enter when it asks to permanently delete. Close the window. Terminal should pop up.
In that terminal type


sudo reboot


no more pulse

ok, launchpad emailed me asking to not advise people to rip out pulse. and after testing the system myself for a few weeks.  i can say i had no problems with it other than i had to update via terminal, and pulse based programs would not function.
however the script i have been told works without it. as long as you remove the kernel pakages from it. they are out of date. will do myself and test when i have time.

not ripping out pulse is fine... if they can suggest a better solution.
everything about my ice1712/M2496 loooks good.  card is found, but no sound -- the analog outs do not appear in any device list.  it's all iec inputs and outputs :/

Being a NooB, and not having too much experience with Ubuntu or Linux in general, I am having fits trying to get up and running.  I was mailed 9.10 32 bit Kharmic by the nice folks at Ubuntu and as I had been having ton's of trouble with malware on my notebook as it was the "Go to, puter here at home and all the young'uns loved to watch their clips on it and they managed to mess it up so very badly that I decided to do a repartition and an install using Ubuntu and staying totally away from windoze.  I managed to install and I am using the box at present, but I cannot view any videos, dvd's, flash or listen to any music whether or not it is on CD DVD or streaming.  I cannot seem to find drivers for this computer which is a fairly new Toshiba Satellite A355D-S6930

I have been chasing my tail till I am dizzy and to no avail.  Being over the edge of the world means that my only help is what I can read, reason, and learn..  No one on this island other than myself use any flavor of Linux.

I just tried the post by kronictokr and here is what it is telling me to do...   I am not finding one statement about the ATI Drivers that I need...

I am really struggling on this and would appreciate any help that might come my way...

(edit)  I should have mentioned that this is a 64 bit laptop and I installed the 32 bit Kharmic Koala 9.10 as that was the disc I had.  If you are wondering why I don't download another, our bandwidth here is out of sight.  Last week with school downloads by the grandkids and the little bells and whistles etc cost me over 450.00 US (not including the $110.00 a month normal IP fee).

I just received a 64 bit Beta from a nephew in France, but haven't made it bootable as of yet, or burned it to another disk...  Fun, Fun, Fun....   No matter, I am not going back to Vista......   Ever!

the script you used above was for 64 bit. given that the command used was aptitude, you may be ok.

try this for your flash

sudo aptitude intall  flashplugin-installer

make sure to reboot, or you may get more headaches than you want

i would try a fresh install of that 64 bit, why isnt it bootable ?  you should just have to set up your bios to boot from disc first, and follow the instructions. if you do that the script above should fix most of youre problems

I am having Popping & Crackling noises when I try to turn the volume up & also when a new song plays or any type of audio starts. I am trying this fix out right now.
